When to go to the emergency room
Some medical conditions require immediate emergency care instead of an office visit. These include:
Severe shortness of breath not relieved by routine asthma medications
Seizures
Serious injuries or broken bones
Deep cuts requiring stitches
Loss of consciousness
Severe allergic reactions
Important note about fever
Fever alone is usually not considered an emergency in children older than 2 months. However, any newborn or infant younger than 2 months with a fever (100.4°F/38°C or higher) should be evaluated immediately.
Fever may also occur for 24–48 hours after routine vaccinations and is often a normal response.
