Medicines for children

Important instructions

Always read and follow the instructions on the medication label. Check the medication strength or concentration before giving each dose.

  • Use the dosing device provided with the medication. Oral syringes and droppers are more accurate than teaspoons. If using a teaspoon, make sure it is a proper measuring spoon—not a regular kitchen spoon.

  • Whenever possible, use your child's weight to determine the correct dose. If you don't know your child's weight, follow the age-based dosing guidelines.

  • Store all medications safely out of children's reach. If you suspect an overdose, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical care immediately.

  • If you're unsure about the correct medication or dosage, contact your pediatrician before giving any medicine, especially to infants under 6 months of age.
